Privacy Policy
Effective June 4, 2026
Socratic Chess (“we”, “us”) is a chess-coaching web app at socraticchess.com. This policy explains what data we collect, why, who processes it on our behalf, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible.
Information we collect
- chess.com username. When you enter a username, we fetch that account’s public games from the chess.com API to analyze them. We do not access any private chess.com data and never ask for your chess.com password.
- Game data. Public game records (moves/PGN, ratings, results, timestamps) returned by chess.com, cached to speed up analysis.
- Account information (optional). If you create a free account, we store your email address. Accounts are passwordless — you sign in with a one-time email link or with Google.
- Google sign-in data. If you choose “Continue with Google”, Google shares your email address, name, and profile picture with us. We use these only to create and identify your account.
- Your reviews and coaching. For signed-in users, we save which games you reviewed and your coaching conversations (the questions you ask and the coach’s replies) so they reload across your devices.
- Usage analytics. Aggregate, privacy-friendly usage metrics (e.g. page views) to understand and improve the app.
How we use your data
- To fetch, analyze, and annotate your chess games.
- To power AI coaching: your question, the relevant board position, and engine analysis are sent to Google’s Gemini API to generate a coaching response.
- To save your reviews and conversations to your account and sync them across devices.
- To operate the service securely, including rate-limiting to prevent abuse.
- To understand usage in aggregate and improve the product.
Google user data
If you sign in with Google, our use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use your Google profile data solely to authenticate you and maintain your account. We do not sell it, share it with third parties for advertising, or use it for any purpose beyond providing Socratic Chess.
Service providers we share data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the providers that run the service on our behalf, under their respective terms:
- Supabase — database and authentication hosting (stores your account, saved reviews, and coaching).
- Google (Gemini API) — generates coaching responses; Google also provides Sign-In.
- chess.com — source of the public game data you ask us to analyze.
- Vercel — application hosting and aggregate analytics.
Cookies
We use only essential cookies: a secure session cookie to keep you signed in, and a cookie that tracks free-tier usage for signed-out visitors. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Data retention
Cached public game data is retained for a short period to improve performance. Account data, saved reviews, and coaching conversations are kept until you delete them or close your account. You can request deletion at any time (see below), and removing your account deletes the data associated with it.
Your rights
You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and you can stop using the service at any time. To make a request, email us at advaitr28@gmail.com.
Children
Socratic Chess is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by a new effective date at the top of this page.
